What is telemetry?

Is the collection of measurements or other data at remote or inaccessible points and their automatic transmission to receiving equipment for monitoring. Traditionally it is assumed to use wireless data communication means (e.g., using radio, ultrasonic, or infrared systems) to transfer data, but it could use wired data transfer mechanisms such as telephone or computer network, optical link or other wired communications like power lines.

SCADA vs. Telemetry:

SCADA systems have traditionally used combinations of radio and direct wired connections, although SONET/SDH is also frequently used for large systems such as railways and power stations.The remote management or monitoring function of a SCADA system is often referred to as telemetry. Thus, telemetry usually forms a subset of the SCADA system.
